Piwnica pod Kominkiem
A Wonderful Old-World Restaurant in Krakow Poland
Piwnica pod Kominkiem just might be the best restaurant featuring Traditional Polish Cuisine in Krakow, Poland. We were certainly convinced of this as we dined on our delicious meal at the time, and as we now think back comparing that meal to others we enjoyed in Krakow, it definitely out-shined the rest.
The restaurant happens to be just down the street from Apartmenty Bracka 6 our wonderful apartment-hotel and we stumbled across it as we searched for a restaurant on our quiet street. We had already been advised, that some of the best restaurants in Krakow are to be found outside of the Market Square, Rynek Glowny.

The atmosphere is lovely and you can dine in the restaurant's romantic cellar which is filled with old-world ambience, and now I wish we had organized our time a little better to come back and dine in that fabulous cellar!

Because it was a beautifully warm early evening in Krakow when we chose to dine at Piwnica pod Kominkiem, we decided to sit outside in the restaurant’s small courtyard located through ancient arches and nestled in the shadow of old baroque buildings. In a riot of color, vines cling to the walls and flowers spill from window boxes adding to the relaxing setting.
We chose a deep bold Italian wine to sip as we looked over the menu, and finally decided to order the Grilled Mountain Cheese served with Cranberry Sauce and a very fresh Steak Tartar presented so that you can mix it to your own taste. Both were fabulous and it was fun to try a local Polish Cheese.
For our entrees, we ordered the Baked Ribs served with Fried Cabbage, Baked Potatoes and a Wine and Mushroom Sauce and the Beef Cheeks served with a Cauliflower-Potato Mash, Carrots, Green Peas and a Dark Sauce. My mouth waters as I think of that meal now!
Jim and I don’t generally eat dessert, so we will leave that for you to explore! Piwnica pod Kominkiem is truly a fabulous find and we highly recommend it as a “don’t miss” restaurant when you visit Krakow.
